We are offering two Real Photo Postcards of the Hanging of Cowboy Outlaw Thomas Edward Ketchum, known as "Black Jack". He was executed on April 26, 1901.Black Jack was executed in Clayton, New Mexico Territory, at the age of 37, after having been found guilty of attempted train robbery. Black Jack was the first to be executed in Clayton. Because no one in Clayton had any experience in conducting a hanging, the rope they used was too long; and because Black Jack had gained a significant amount of weight during his time in jail, he was decapitated when he dropped through the trap door. The cause of death was described as "Execution by hanging (long drop decapitation)". The first is a photograph taken on the scaffold as the noose was being put around Black Jack's neck. The second photograph shows his body lying on the ground after the hanging. We can see that his head had separated from the rest of his body as a result of the hanging. For at least 10 years prior to his execution Black Jack was known to have committed many crimes including train robbery and the murder of several people. Black Jack and his gang, including his brother Sam, were connected with several other outlaws of the day including two female outlaws, Josie Bassett and Ann Bassett, who were girlfriends to several members of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch Gang. On August 16, 1899, Black Jack single-handedly attempted to rob the same train the gang had robbed just a few weeks earlier.
The train conductor spotted Black Jack, recognized him from the previous robbery and shot him in the arm knocking him off his horse. The train continued and the next day a posse came out, found Black Jack, and transported him to medical facilities in Colorado where his right arm had to be amputated. He was nursed back to health and sent to Clayton, New Mexico Territory for trial and his subsequent hanging.
